The Rush City Council shared responses to plans for a new community center at its regular meeting Monday.
City Administrator Daniel Hoffman presented preliminary plans for center, which will be part of the forthcoming senior housing development.

Councilman David Bengston suggested a dishwasher for the kitchen. The council members liked the idea.

ìThere looks to be plenty of space for a dishwasher,î said Councilman Mick Louzek.
Bengston was examining a room adjacent to the kitchen and noticed that if the false wall were to be adjusted there might be problems with the door.

He suggested they move the door toward the other side of the room or to the middle.
The council members agreed with this assessment, with Louzek noting that it ìmakes too much sense.î
Hoffman also mentioned that the food shelf will use one of the storage rooms in the center.

He is meeting with the architect this week. Milcon Construction of North Branch is managing the construction.

In other news, Melanie Hedberg of the Rush City Chamber of Commerce wrote a letter of complaint Dec. 19 to the council regarding snow removal on Main Street.

The letter refers to the snow piled up on the curb as a result of the plowing of Main Street. Hedberg wrote of her desire for the snow to be removed more promptly.

Hoffman said that the city usual waits until snowfall has subsided before hauling snow away. Mayor Mike Skalsky was not impressed.

ìLetís see if we canít handle it a little differently,î he said to Hoffman.

Hedberg said in a phone interview Tuesday that she wrote the letter to bring attention to potential liability issues surrounding snow piles on the curbs. The letter included signatures of all businesses along the area of West 4th Street where the Chamber is located.

ìWe had a client from our office fall in that area,î she said. ìItís an issue of liability with the city to have older people trying to conduct their business while navigating the snow.î

She said that all the businesses on the block expressed the same concern. The city removed the snow last weekend, she said.

In other news, the council adopted, pending review by the city attorney, a fire department mutual aid agreement between Rush City, Harris, North Branch, Braham and Pine City.

ìIf there is a structure fire, they call you automatically,î Hoffman said.
