New law renders meth harder to manufacture

From now on when you go to the store to get Sudafed, look behind the pharmacy counter.

Beginning July 1, a number of new laws came into effect, but one of the most talked about laws addresses a massive problem across the country - methamphetamine.

Pill-form medications made from ephedrine and pseudoephedrine will now be located behind pharmacy counters and buyers will have to ask for them, be at least 18 years old, show identification and sign a logbook. In addition, a person looking to purchase Sudafed and similar brands will be limited to two packagers per transaction, not to exceed six grams.

Medications in gel capsule or liquid form are not subject to the same restrictions, but could very well be should meth producers begin using those products in creating their drug.

Mike Runisch, manager of the two Holiday gas stations in North Branch, said that as a result of the law, Holiday no longer sells ephedrine and pseudoephedrine medications in a pill-form, but they do have the liquid and gel capsules.

But even before the law came into effect, Runisch said, Holiday regulated sales of Sudafed and similar product.

ìWeíve had it behind the counter for at least five years,î he said.

North Branch Police Chief Jules Zimmer said the new meth law will make it more difficult to obtain ingredients, but he said manufacturers will find other ways to make meth.

ìWhenever anything is done to curtail it, the people who are desperate will find different ways to accommodate their habit,î he said, ìbut making it difficult to manufacture is good.î

Other components of the law include:
ï A written prescription from a veterinarian will be needed to purchase any products with ephedrine and pseudoephedrine for use for animals.

ï The law criminalizes meth-related activities that impact children and vulnerable adults and establishes a penalty of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
