Tigers qualify for sectional meet in multiple events

By Cynthia Scott

Rush City track teams weathered October-like conditions at the subsection meet in Pine City on May 25 and will advance several athletes to the section meet this Saturday at Macalester College in St. Paul. Athletes who placed first through sixth in an event qualified for sectional competition.

The meet was plagued by steady rain, wind and cool temperatures that caused the postponement of all field events.

The Tigers' Josh Dahl and Christine Frandsen claimed first place finishes in the boys' and girls' 1600m runs. Frandsen also qualified in the 800m run with a second place finish.

Several Tigers qualified in multiple events. Liz Melin finished second in both the 300m hurdles and the triple jump, and sixth in the 100m hurdles.

Amber Hoffman's third place finish in the 400m dash and 5th place in the 300m dash qualified her for both of those events. In addition, Hoffman ran on the second place 4x400 relay team, along with Katie Turner, Frandsen and Alex Saxton. The 4x100 team of Katy Buckholtz, Turner, Shannon Grimes and Saxton placed second as well.

Saxton also finished second in the 200m dash.

Eighth grader Michelle Stenger finished sixth to qualify in the 1600m run, and Gillian Calander became the first female pole vaulter in school history ever to qualify for a section meet with a 7' jump, good for sixth place.

The boys' team will send four relay teams to sectionals: the second place 4x800 (Justin Jacobson, Chad Karlsson, Dahl and Matt Wuorinen), the fifth place 4x200, the third place 4x100 (Terron Novak, Jeremy Marty, Blake Rustad and Jeff Jennings) and the third place 4x400 (Joe Hophan, Justin Carmichael, Justin Jacobson, Dahl).

Hophan placed fourth in the 300m hurdles, while Carmichael qualified in the long jump with a 3rd place finish, as did Novak in the pole vault. Halvorson and Jennings both qualified in high jump with third and fifth place finishes.

Rounding out the Rush City contingent will be Ben Cook, who placed fourth in discus.

Team results, boys: Mora 90; Hinckley-Finlayson 88; Meadow Creek 79; Braham 74; Rogers 67; Rush City 6; Pine City 60; East Central 35.

Team results, girls: Rogers 111; Mille Lacs 110; Pine City 79; Rush City 73.5; Hinckley-Finlayson 55.5; Mora 54; Braham 42; Meadow Creek 33.
