Response to global warming issue

To the editor:

In response to Ms. Carlsonís letter last week (3-09-05) referring to global warming and the political agenda. It seems to me that Ms. Carlson is the one making it into a political topic by bringing up Kyoto and asking voters to contact their congressmen and the President.

I am curious as to where she gets her information regarding global warming. In National Geographicís September, 2004 issue, they state that the hottest years on record are 1) 1998; 2) 2002; 3) 2003. It also states that the average temperature increase in winter on the West Antarctic Peninsula since 1950 is 8.8ƒF. And, closer to home, in Glacier National Park, Montana ñ when created in 1910 it had an estimated 150 glaciers, now they have decreased to less than 30.
Just because it does not happen in your bubble, doesnít mean it is not happening.

The 20th century has seen the greatest warming in at least one thousand years, and natural forces canít account for it all. According to National Geographic, one of the culprits to this temperature increase is the rise of CO2 emissions. To assume that industrialization has no impact is simply irresponsible. Who can say absolutely that the rising ocean temperatures did not facilitate the earthquake and tsunami tragedy?

I hope that I am not the only one who grows weary of people forgetting this planet is not disposable. Maybe we could all make our bubbles big enough that they encompass more than just our own backyards.
