Who decides when we should die

To the editor:

There is an important fight to save Terry Shiavoís life by March 18. The U.S. Supreme court wants to starve and thirst a lady to death by pulling her feeding tube. Do we want the Supreme Court to decide when our life ends or should we leave this up to God?

Terri is purposefully interactive, alert, curious, and very responsive. Sheís a lovely woman who lives with a very serious disability. She lives free of any life support machines receiving nutrition through a tube that is connected only at meal times.
Before we adopt mercy killing in our society, letís look at Holland. Holland shows us that the right to die can soon turn into an obligation. If we all donít fight for Terriís case, we may become a victim at any age in this country of euthanasia. We have a duty and responsibility to research and pray for Terryís parents to win this case. Most people want to die due to the pain they feel. Most professionals recognize that if pain is controlled, in which it can be in most cases, very few terminally ill people ask to be put to death. Back in 1973, other countries warned us of the negative affects of legalized abortion. Since we did not pay attention to these warnings we suffer from the same consequences in our county today. We must learn from the mistakes of others by studying other countries that have enacted mercy killing laws. California is presently considering certain assisted suicide laws. Hollywood is approving mercy killing through such movies as Million Dollar Baby and the television series ER. May we all do our research and pray for Terri Shiavo.
