To the editor:
In response to Stepaniakís guest column on 2/23/05, I submit the following. While I understand his frustration at the fact that our children seem to attend schools for fewer days than other countries, the tone of his column seems to be that parents and the community at large do not think education is important. I whole-heartedly disagree with this assertion. However, I do believe that starting school before Labor Day creates more problems than it solves. I, for one, am not concerned about having my children in school into the second week of June. I would much rather have an extra few days at the end of the summer to enjoy with my children. Hereís an idea - why donít we just eliminate ìteacher workshopî and ìbuilt-in snow days,î thus leaving plenty of days to fulfill the requirement for number of school days.
