Negroponte should be rejected

To the editor:

President Bush has nominated John Negroponte to beİour first Intelligence czar. I would encourage you to write your representatives urging them to reject Negroponte.

Negroponte wasİambassador to Honduras during the period where the contras were illegally receiving aid to overthrow the reform government of Nicaragua. They were based in Honduras. According to Negroponte he was unaware of those illegal activities, yet it was common knowledge to almost everyone else in the world. Now you have to askİhow an ambassadorİwho was blind to what was even written in the local papers can be worthy toİserve as our top intelligence official? Beyond that, he served in a region where 100,000s of people were killed or disappeared by pro-American governments which disregarded the human rights of its citizens.

Twenty-five years ago this month, Archbishop Oscar Romero was gunned down while saying Mass by a soldier trainedİat our School of the Americas at Ft. Benning, Georgia and and under orders from the El Savadoran government because Romero spoke out on behalf of the poor and therefore was a threat to the government. Negroponte is a symbol of American oppression to most of the working class and poor in Central America. His appointment would be another Bush decision that would further destabilize the world.
