S & C Bank helps Harris Fire Department become First Responder ready

People in and around the city of Harris will have an extra blanket of protection now that eight members of the Harris Fire Department have completed First Responder training.

Add to that the fact that S & C Bank has donated $1,050 to pay for a radio and eight First Responder bags and the health and welfare of residents of the community is in better shape than ever before.

It took just one call to the bank, said fireman and first responder Doug Chaffee, and they were 100 percent willing to help out.
The First Responders will be a big help in the community, Chaffee said. All eight fire fighters volunteered to take the training and will perform their jobs on a voluntary basis, he said.

Lakes Region EMS will provide the supplies that will go into each responders' bag. When an item is used by the responder, it can then easily be replaced because it will be the same as the EMS uses.

The fire department has one radio and the bank's donation will help provide a second radio. Funding is still needed for an additional six radios and, said Chaffee, the department is looking for donations to help buy defibrillators.

Pat Wortham, second assistant chief on the fire department, said the goal is to have the First Responders ready to go by July.
Of the donation from the bank, Wortham said, "I can't tell you how much we appreciate it."

The Harris First Responders will be dispatched when a 911 call comes in for the Harris area.
