Regarding the cost of joint sewer

TO THE EDITOR:

Citizens of Stacy, it is time to wake up. Your mayor and city council have gone way beyond the bounds of decent government. The incidents of the past few weeks are just the tip of the iceberg. The current mayor and city council are not giving the people of Stacy the true facts.

For over two years now, Stacy has been planning to build a sewer pipeline to join the joint sewer treatment plant. At a public hearing in the spring of 2003 the cityís bonding agent stated the project would cost everyone connected to the service approximately $65 per month, on top of the service fee. The mayor said that was not correct, it would only cost an additional dollar or two. This same line was repeated this past March when new rates for water and sewer service were announced. A modest increase of only 1-2 dollars is supposed to cover operating expenses and the cost of building the pipeline.

Letís look at the real numbers. The cost of the project is approximately $3 million. If you borrow that at 6.5 percent interest and pay back over a term of 30 years, the monthly payments are over $19,200. There are only 250-300 taxable parcels in Stacy. How much is your share?

After the pipe is built, it will be owned and operated by the joint sewer commission. They will determine the sewer rates paid by the Stacy residents, not the city council.

Concerned citizens should attend the Stacy City Council meetings the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. You also need to diligently check the city bulletin board outside city hall for postings of other meetings.

If I were a resident of Stacy, I would be determining how to re-call the mayor and most of the city council.
