The North Branch Relay for Life kick-off was held Apr. 27 at the OíFudge Deli & Coffee at Tanger Outlet Center. The kick-off is an opportunity for families, caregivers, cancer survivors, schools, companies and others to come together to kick off the Relay for Life season and the local event, which will be held July 29.

The Relay for Life is an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance and take turns walking around a track relay style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of luminaria around the track in a moving ceremony to honor cancer survivors, as well as friends and family members lost to the disease.

The Relay represents hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and one day, cancer will be eliminated. In 1985, Relay for Life began with one who walked and ran around a track for 24 hours and raised $27,000.

The North Branch Relay has raised more than $614,246 over seven years. If you would like to join in the 8th annual Relay, contact Sharon Gallagher at (651) 674-5886 or Jessica Erlitz at (651) 255-8159. You can pick up a Team Captain packet and luminaria bags at the Tanger Outlet Center mall office in North Branch.

The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the Society has 14 regional divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities, involving millions of volunteers across the U.S.
