Two conference wins to close out April gave Rush City a share of first place in the Great River Conference, as the Tigers downed Hinckley-Finlayson 3-1 on Apr. 25 and pummeled Isle 12-2 on Apr. 28.
Aitkin shares the top spot with the Tigers, and the two teams will meet in Aitkin on May 11. They were scheduled to play Apr. 26, but weather forced a postponement.
Junior Adam Best had his best pitching game of the season against Hinckley-Finlayson, going seven innings with five strikeouts, one walk and five hits.
The Tigers scored one run in the second inning, on a single by Josh Ehrreich that scored Dan Gamache from second. They added two runs in the fourth inning when a throwing error allowed Gamache to score from second. Gamache had gotten on base with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ray Grabau. Ehrreich reached on the same throwing error that allowed Gamache to score, and then moved to second on a hit by Brad Carlson. Tony Webb singled to left to score Ehrreich for the Tigersí third run.
Hinckley-Finlayson scored in the third inning on a hit by Josh Zandtke.
John Bosman picked up the win against Isle, giving up four hits, three walks and striking out six. Isleís two runs were unearned, coming off three Tiger errors.
ìWe were glad that we won the game, but it wasnít a very well played game by either team,î said Coach Bob Schlagel. ìHitting wise we really didnít make good contact all day. Defensively, we were not sharp.î
The Tigers scored four runs in the second inning, beginning with Ehrreichís bases-loaded RBI. The Tigers worked out three walks in the innning.
Rush City put six on the board in the fourth inning on a two-run single by John Bosman and Ehrreichís second RBI of the day. Webb contributed an RBI single.
Sophomore Nick Behrendt had an RBI double for the Tigers.
James Scott scored both of Isleís runs, one in the second and one in the fourth.
