Last Thursday was a bittersweet day for North Branch cross country.
The bitter: The boysí and girlsí teams each missed qualifying for the state meet by a hairís breadth at the section 7AA meet by finishing in third place. Only the top two teams qualified.
The sweet: Two North Branch runners are headed for the state meet in the individual competition, where the top 10 finishers qualified. Nick Ramberg placed fifth in the boysí division and Haley Hasleiet squeaked out 10th place in the girlsí race. Both will travel to St. Olaf College in Northfield this Saturday, Nov. 5, to compete in the state finals.
This will be the first state cross country competition for Ramberg and Hasleiet. But they are experienced competitors at the state level, since both went to state last year in track as members of the 4x800 relay teams. Ramberg is a junior and Hasleiet an eighth grader.
In the boysí competition, section champion Dan Greeno from St. Michael-Albertville was ranked 9th in the state in the final poll of the season.

Top 10 team scores, girls: Duluth East 90, Hermantown 112, North Branch 128, Elk River 131, Monticello 150, Hibbing 160, St. Francis 167, St. Michael 186, Cloquet 202, Princeton 273.
Individual scores:
