Not just another state holiday

TO THE EDITOR:

As fall yields to winter, we now spend our days enjoying the remnants of warm weather and planning for the cold days ahead. In our busy lives most days go by with scarcely a thought given to some of the momentous events in our nationís history. It is my sincere hope this Friday will not be one of those days. This Friday is Veterans Day.

On Nov. 11, 1918 an armistice was signed, bringing World War I to an end. That day has since been set aside to honor our nationís veterans. After World War II and Korea, President Eisenhower changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to signify that all of our veterans deserved a day to be recognized and honored.

Most of us know someone who has served in uniform. Many veterans are quiet about their service, but theyíve all contributed greatly to the cause of securing our liberty, and we owe them all a debt of gratitude.

In our daily lives we do too little to thank those who keep America free. Please honor our veterans by not allowing this Veterans Day to become just another day. Take an extra few seconds out of your day and say ěThanksî to the Veterans in your life.

Sean Nienow
State Senator, Dist. 17
