North Branch 6th graders won the title Saturday, Oct. 29, defeating Columbus Township and completing an undefeated season with a record of 7-0.
After a lackluster 0-0 tie at half, North Branch broke the deadlock on the fourth play of their first possession with a 60-yard touchdown run by Brett Klun on a sweep. The swarming defense held for three plays with tackles by Chace Johnson, Ben Doerr and Kyle Goshey, pushing back Columbus to a 4th and 12.A 70-yard punt return behind superb blocking to the 1 yard line by Klun set up North Branchís second touchdown by Zach Shepherd on a quarterback sneak. On Columbusís next possession the defense held again and North Branch took over on downs. The offense drove to the 10 yard line on two pass receptions by Dakota Savich from Shepherd. This set up the third touchdown by Trent Holmes, who drove the middle untouched into the end zone. The point after by Shepherd put the score at 20-0.
North Branch defense sealed the victory with an interception by Travis Moreno with less than two minutes left in the game.
The season was led by a highly effective offense and very stingy defense, outscoring opponents 172-14. The offense was led by quarterbacks Travis Anderson, Zach Shepherd and Jaeger Breitkreutz. Running backs Jared Houle, Justin Brunet, Brett Klun, Trent Holmes and Chace Johnson ran behind the dominating front line of center Kyle Goshey, guards Devin Quam and Kerry Konrad, tackles Brandon Heidelberger and Isaac Chitty and tight end Dakota Savich.
The defense, which averaged giving up less than two first downs per game, was anchored by the defensive line: ends Joe Fairbanks and Ben Doerr, tackles Goshey and Breitkreutz, and guards Quam and Heidelberger. Linebacking crew consisted of Kolton Keister, Travis Moreno, Konrad, Holmes and Johnson; with defensive backs Brunet, Anderson, Klun and Houle.
