Tigers defeat Duluth Marshall, RC field good to go for this week's game

By Cynthia Scott

Rush City took advantage of seven Hilltopper turnovers as the Tigers secured their second win of the season on Friday, downing Duluth Marshall 26-21 in Duluth.

The game was scheduled for Rush City, but was moved to Duluth since the RC football field was still under water following last week's torrential rains.

Jake Bosman ran for one touchdown and threw for two more to lead the Tigers. Senior MacKenzie Johnston had a career day on the ground, carrying the ball 16 times for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Duluth Marshall's Jake McDonnell carried the ball 29 times for 316 yards and scored all three of his team's TDs.

Marshall went up by one touchdown following McDonnell's 88-yard run on their first play from scrimmage. The Tigers came to within one point with Johnston's 5 yard touchdown run, but the extra point failed. Rush City took a 20-14 lead in the second quarter on Bosman's 1 yard touchdown, but again the extra point failed.

Marshall answered with another long touchdown run from McDonnell, this time a 60-yarder. The 2-point conversion was successful, and Marshall took a 21-20 lead at the half.

The final and winning touchdown was a 33 yard TD pass from Bosman to Adam Best in the third quarter.

But turnovers were the name of the game. Best led the way, with two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Cole Karnick also picked off a pass while Jason Benson, Dan Scheffer and Jerred Nelson each had fumble recoveries.

The Tigers also had trouble hanging onto the ball, fumbling twice and throwing one interception.

Coach Gary Nelson praised the play of the offensive line. Patrick Blatz, Ben Cook, Tyler Schommer, Jeff Blodgett and Jerred Nelson had a solid afternoon of blocking, allowing the offense to tally 203 yards rushing.

Defensively, Nelson led the Tigers with 3 solo tackles, 10 assists and a fumble recovery. Best had three solo tackles and three assists in addition to two interceptions and a fumble recovery; and Johnston had three solo tackles and five assists.

On Friday the Tigers take on Ogilvie at 7:30 p.m. in a game that features flag football at halftime. The game will be played at home as scheduled.
