RC runners compete at Swain, St. John's Prep

Posted: 10/4/05

Laura Hestbeck, Michelle Stenger and Sean Karvonen turned in the top performances for the Rush City cross country team at the Swain Invitational in Duluth on Saturday.

Hestbeck placed 11th out of 91 8th and 9th grade girls, while Stenger came in 9th out of 106 sophomore runners. Karvonen came in 13th among 69 sophomore runners in the boys' race.

In team competition, the boys placed 24th out of 30 full teams. The girls team was incomplete due to injuries and age group races.
"This is the hardest course of the year with several major hills," said Coach Kevin Smith. "Our team worked real hard and many met their goal times, but some did not due to the 75 degree hot sun and the hills."

Earlier in the week, the Tigers traveled to St. John's Prep, where 11 teams competed. The boys placed second out of six full teams. Karvonen, Stenger and Hestbeck again led the way, with each one placing first in their category. Josh Dahl and Kasey Fleming finished second in boys varsity and girls junior high, respectively.
