Experienced physician joins Wyoming clinic

Posted: 10/4/05

Fairview Lakes Health Services this month welcomes Steven J. Thompson, M.D., to the Family Practice Clinic at Fairview Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming.

ìWeİare excited to have Dr. Thompson join Fairview Lakes group practice. We are committed toİmeet the medical care needs of the communities we serve by recruiting highly qualified physicians like Dr. Thompson,î said Dave Dobosenski,İchief operating officer for Fairview Lakes. Thompson is the third family practiceİphysician to join Fairview Lakes in the past two months and one of 11 new physicians joining Fairview Lakes this year.

Dr. Thompson comes to Fairview Lakes from the Owatonna Clinic-Mayo Health System. He was previously on staff at the Owatonna Hospital where he also worked as an emergency physician.

A 1996 graduate of The University of Minnesota Medical School, Thompson completed his family practice residency at the University of Minnesota/North Memorial Family Medicine Residency program, where he was chief resident.

Thompson decided to pursue a medical career after first obtaining a bachelor of science degree in economics and finance from the University of Minnesota. A stint working as a station secretary on the pediatrics oncology floor at the University of Minnesota Hospital further convinced Thompson that medicine was the right field, but before entering medical school he worked for one year as a senior account specialist in the finance department at University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics.

Experienced in both the business and clinical aspects of medicine, Dr. Thompson chaired the family medicine department in Owatonna Clinic, served as physician champion for the research and development of an electronic medical record system there, and mentored new family physicians as they began their practices. He has chaired the ambulatory surgery committee at Owatonna Hospital and helped develop systems to improve workflow and patient access to care.

Dr. Thompson has moved to North Branch and looks forward to establishing his practiceİin the Family Practice Clinic at Fairview Lakes in Wyoming.İHe describes his approach to patient care as ìservice-oriented and patient-centered.î

ìMine is not a paternalistic styleóI want my patients to take part in their health care,î he says. ìItís a matter of teamwork in which both the patient and the physician participate.î His special areas of interest include obstetrics, pediatrics and sports medicine.
