A young man who was painting the exterior of the North Branch Cinemaís new addition Sunday called family members on his cell phone from the bucket high in the air when he smelled something burning. When he tried to come down there was a mechanical malfunction and he was stranded atop the burning van. From out of nowhere came a man and a woman who took a ladder off the top of the van and extended it up to him to use to escape.
He said he was ready to jump at that point.
The van was totally engulfed when the NB fire department arrived. While it appeared from a distance that the building was on fire, there was no damage from the burning van.
The young painter was not injured. No one seemed to know what happened to the good Samaritan couple who put up the ladder.
