Vikes take second at Duluth tourney

By Cynthia Scott

The volleyball Vikings put a disappointing 3-0 home loss to Benilde-St. Margaret's behind them last week and went on to take second place at the Duluth East tournament on Oct. 1.

The Vikes were dominated 25-21, 25-18 and 25-11 by a superior Benilde-St. Margaretís team on Sept. 29 for their second conference loss of the season. Their first loss was to Spring Lake Park on Sept. 27.

But the team pulled itself together and played solid ball in Duluth, defeating Hill Murray 2-1 (21-25, 25-15, 15-8), Washburn, Wisc. 2-0 (25-15, 25-15) and Grand Rapids 2-0 (25-14, 25-18). They lost 2-1 to Forest Lake in the championship game, winning the first match 25-20 but losing the next two, 27-25 and 15-10. They were down by as many as 9 points before rallying to tie the score at 23. ìWe were really looking forward to avenging our loss,î said Coach Kari Francis, referring to the season-opening 3-0 defeat the Vikings suffered at the hands of Forest Lake.

Francis called the game againstWashburn ìone of the best matches from point 1 to point 25 we have played this season.î
Randi Zentner and Tess Prouty-Kunshier, who have played most of the season on the JV team, provided a signficant spark off the bench.

Middles Kaia Nyberg and Megan Scherer dominated the middle and outsides Megan Ranger and Kacie Ramberg had strong games.
ìWe were very pleased and excited by the progress the team made this weekend. We gained a lot of confidence this weekend to take back into the conference,î Francis said.

The Vikings travel to Fridley on Oct. 4. Their final home conference game is against Chisago Lakes Oct. 6.

Sectional play begins on Oct. 24.
