The wonder of water

Posted: 10/5/05

By Patrick Tepoorten

Fifth grade students from all over the Chisago County gathered on Camp Ojiketa Friday for the third annual Chisago County Children's Water Festival, where they learned more about the wonderful world of water. The roughly 750 students listened to and took part in demonstrations on subjects like weather, ground water, drinking water, and the relationships between aquatic plants and animals and where they live.

Clancy the mercury-sniffing dog entertained students with his ability to detect levels of mercury with a keen sense of smell, and the Chisago County Historical Society explained how ice was harvested from area lakes by early settlers. Although the event is planned as an educational day, the exhibits and demonstrations were hands-on and fun. For the hard to please, there was also a water arcade, where kids tested their skills at casting fishing line from a soda can and damming water.

The day-long event was hosted by the Chisago County Water Plan Policy Team.
