Irene (Lundquist) Cates

Irene (Lundquist) Cates died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005 in a hospital in Midland, Texas after a long period of ill health. She had been living with her daughter in Odessa but her home was in Hobbs, New Mexico.

She was born in Rush City, Minn. on Aug. 28, 1924 to Aaron and Florence (Norris) Lundquist. She was baptized and confirmed in First Lutheran Church and attended school and graduated from Rush City High School in 1942. She worked in St. Paul and the Rush City area before meeting Bob Cates and moving to Amarillo, Texas where they were married in Clovis, NM on Dec. 11, 1947.

Bob was a career bootmaker and they operated Cates Boot Shop in Hobbs, New Mexico for many years. Irene became skilled at stitching the tops of cowboy boots with beautiful designs while her husband made them from custom fittings. After their retirement they continued to live in Hobbs.

Services were held Sept. 16 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hobbs. Her husband had died April 15, 2001, and she was laid to rest beside him in Prairie Haven Cemetery in Hobbs.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda and husband Robert Parker, Odessa, Texas; a son, Robert Cates and wife Tracey of Hobbs; a grandson Seane Parker and two step-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Kurkowski of Frederic, Wisc. and a brother, Raymond Lundquist of Rochester, Minn.; many cousins and other relatives.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her father Aaron Lundquist of Rush City and mother Florence Mortenson of Hinckley; a sister, Lucille (Don) Cabak of Sandstone, Minn.
