Hinckley-Finlaysonís Tim Taggart flipped into high gear in the second half of last Friday nightís Homecoming game, blowing open what was a close contest and leading the Jaguars to a 30-16 victory over Rush City.
The Tigers held the conference-leading Jaguars to 45 yards in the first quarter and 40 in the second quarter and took an 8-8 tie into the locker room at halftime.
Hinckley-Finlayson scored first and made a 2 point conversion to go up 8-0 in the first quarter. But the Tigers came back to tie the score on a run by James Warfield and a 2 point conversion on a pass from Jacob Bosman to Jeff Jennings.
On the Jaguarsí first possession of the second half, Taggart flew around the right end and down the sideline for a 73-yard TD run. Coach Gary Wendorf said that was a turning point for his team.
ìThe kids really lost confidence at that time,î he said. The Tigers gave up 172 yards in the third quarter.
The Tigersí second TD was a pass from Bosman to Zach Beck with five minutes remaining in the game. Jennings again caught the 2 point conversion pass.
Hinckley-Finlayson harassed the Tiger offense the entire game, forcing a number of botched snaps from center Patrick Blatz to Bosman. Bosman threw four interceptions.
But the Tiger defense created turnovers of their own. Hinckley-Finlayson threw two interceptions ñ one to Bosman and one to Jeremy Marty ñ and lost two fumbles.
Defensively the Tigers were led by Jerred Nelson with 2 solo tackles and 11 assists. He also had a fumble recovery and forced a Jaguar fumble. Jacob Bosman had one solo tackle and 7 assists in addition to the interception; Adam Best came up with a fumble recovery and four solo tackles; and Josh Beck, coming off an ankle injury, had one solo tackle and 8 assists.
Offensively, Warfield rushed 13 times for 32 yards and one touchdown; Bosman completed 10 of 28 for 182 yards, one touchdown and a pair of 2 point conversion; Best had 3 catches for 101 yards; Zach Beck caught 3 passes for 53 yards and a touchdown; and Jennings caught a pair of 2 point conversion passes.
