Tigers swamped in opener

By Cynthia Scott

Rush City opened its 2005 football season Sept. 1 with a thrilling 67-yard touchdown pass 90 seconds into the game, but could not maintain momentum over four quarters, losing 14-38 to Norwood Young America.

On the second play from scrimmage, quarterback Jake Bosman hooked up with Adam Best for the 67 yard touchdown strike. Jason Bensonís PAT was good, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead.

The Raiders got the next two touchdowns, tying the score at 7 with a 40 yard touchdown run and PAT and taking a 13-7 lead on pass into the end zone.

But Bosman and Best worked their magic again, running the same pass play with the same result, this time for a 65 yard TD. Benson's PAT put the Tigers up 14-13.

But that was it in the scoring column for Rush City. The turning point in the game came late in the second quarter when Rush City fumbled a punt attempt and Norwood Young America recovered on the 20 yard line. The Raiders went on to score a touchdown, and took a 25-14 lead at halftime.

ěThat was a costly fumble. The kids were down at halftime,î said Coach Gary Wendorf.

The second half belonged to Norwood Young Americaís offense. The Raiders controlled the ball for all but 13 plays. The Tigers were able to move the ball to the 1 yard line in the fourth quarter on a 54-yard pass from Bosman to Sam Marty, but then fumbled the ball going into the end zone on the next play.

Offensive leaders for the Tigers were Bosman, who threw 8 of 19 for 264 yards; Best, with 3 receptions for 146 yards and 2 touchdowns; Sam Marty with one catch for 54 yards; Jeff Jennings with 2 receptions for 44 yards; James Warfield with 5 carries for 28 yards, and Mackenzie Johnston with 7 carries for 20 yards.

Defensively, Jerred Nelson had 2 solo tackles and 10 assists; Jeremy Marty had 6 solos and 5 assists. Bosman had 2 solo tackles, 8 assists and a fumble recovery.

All the other teams in the Great River Conference won their games on Friday. The Tigers' next opponet, East Central, defeated Luck, Wisc. 21-20. The Tigers play at East Central at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9.
