The 34th Infantry Division

TO THE EDITOR:

The story concerning the deployment of Emily White to Iraq as part of the 34th Infantry Division was of great interest to me. I was part of the 34th (Red Bull) Division as a medic in a clearing station from April 1941 until May 1945. We were stationed in North Ireland, England, and made the landings in and fought the entire North African campaign and the entire Italian campaign.

We belong to the 34th Infantry Division Association which was founded in 1946 and has met every year since its founding. On the back of our membership card is printed the following: ìThe bearer is a member of the famous Thirty-Fourth Infantry Division Association. This Division in World War II had the distinction of being not only the first to land in the European Theater but also had more days in combat (over 600) than any other, and was accredited with capturing more than 40,000 prisoners. The 34th ranked second to none and stands high on the scroll of honor among the greatest fighting units that ever carried the Stars and Striped into battle.î

Emily White can be proud to be a member of such a distinguished unit and we wish her God Speed and a safe return to her home and family.
