North Branch Middle School Student Jacob Kolke competed in the State Geography Bee on Friday, March 31 at Macalester College in St. Paul.
Kolke was one of only 99 students in grades 4-8 statewide to participate in the state geography bee. The event includes four hours of intense questioning. Students were grouped into five rooms (of approximately 20 students each) where they randomly chose a number that gave them their ěseat number.î
The question person then went through the questions, and the students received their question based on the number of the seat in which they were sitting. Kolke did not advance after the first round of questioning.
According to Geography instructor Lori Blomquist, ěThe winner in Jacobís room had all eight questions correct and Jacob said he knew the answers to all of that personís questions. So if he had just chosen seat number 11 instead of 18 who knows what would have happened?î After the room-by-room questioning a final, double-elimination round was held.
In the end, the winner of the State Geography Bee was a student from Jefferson Middle School who will represent Minnesota in the National Geography Bee in Washington, D.C., at the end of May. Alex Trebek of Jeopardy fame will be the moderator.
