Coon Rapids man drowns at Goose Lake Narrows

Squad cars, emergency vehicles and the BCI van blocked traffic across the Goose Lake narrows bridge for most of the day Saturday as the investigation into the drowning of a Coon Rapids man was conducted.

A drowning at Goose Lake, on the border between Fish Lake and Nessel Townships, left Chisago County investigators temporarily at a loss for an explanation on Saturday morning.

A passerby was asked to call 911 at approximately 7:36 a.m., by a witness to a man face down in the water at Goose Lake Narrows. Both medical and law enforcement personnel were called to the scene. The victim was identified as Brian Scott Folk, 39, of Coon Rapids.

Because of the unusual nature of the situation, a man apparently drowned while fishing from shore, unwitnessed, with only the upper half of his body in the water, foul play could not immediately be ruled out. Furthermore, the area in which Folk was fishing was frequented that morning by any number of people.

Chisago County Sheriffís Chief Deputy Bob Shoemaker referred to the circumstances as a ìconfusing scene,î and added that the Sheriffís office ìinvestigates all unwitnessed deaths.î

Since the discovery of the body, the Sheriffís office has indicated that Folk suffered from a medical condition that is likely to have caused him to fall and subsequently drown.

An autopsy was performed on Folk by the Washington County Coroner on Monday. It is believed now that Folkís death will be ruled natural causes.
