Farewell to a lifelong friend

TO THE EDITOR:

Jim Smith and I began a lifelong brotherly relationship in Harris over 70 years ago. We played baseball on the banks of Goose Creek with right field straight up Ted Lindholmís hill, a few feet beyond first base, and left field nearly to Hwy. 61.

In winter off school days after a heavy snow, his father, a rural carrier, would load both of us and shovels in his car, as needed for the unplowed parts of his route.

Double and triple dating to Cambridge for an evening show was one of lifeís pleasures and usually made possible after a few days labor in the Art Deming potato world.

Our barrack bunks were side by side in our hitch in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Jay Cooke State Park.

Later in life our jobs separated us through the years though we had frequent family visits in Minnesota and Texas. We golfed from Denton, Texas, to Duluth and beyond.

August 16th fate decreed closure to this lifelong friendship and I simply say - ìRest in peace old friend and Brother and may the good Lord take a liking to you.î
