NB student wins state poster contest

Rhiannon Waletzkoís conservation poster earned first place at the state level.

Rhiannon Waletzko from North Branch Middle School won first place at the state level for her entry in the 2005-2006 Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD) Poster Contest.

Waletzko said she enjoyed making the poster and said ìI learned how to take care of our soil better.î

For her efforts she received a check for $100 along with a certificate and a scholarship to a conservation camp next summer. Her poster will be displayed at the 2006 Minnesota State Fair in the DNR Building. You can also take a look at her winning poster by logging on to www.chisagoswcd.org.

ìOur Soil...a Layer of Lifeî was the theme for this yearís Poster & Essay contest. Posters are judged on the impact of the conservation message, originality, and artistic arrangement. The Chisago Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) in association with MASWCDís annual poster contest was a huge success this year with over 300 5th- and 6th-grade students throughout Chisago County participating.

This year the theme provided students with the opportunity to learn about the amazing layers of life within the soil beneath our feet and how we can better protect and preserve this very important resource.

The 2006-2007 contest theme will be ìCommunity Waters.î For more information on how you can participate, check out the Chisago SWCD Web site at www.chisagoswcd.org.
