Duane Mathiesen
Duane Mathiesen was born Aug. 31, 1936 in Lisbon, North Dakota to Herbert and Ella (Granlund) Mathiesen. He grew up and attended school in the DeLamere area. Duane, who lettered in high school basketball, football and played trombone in his high school band, graduated in 1954 from DeLamere, North Dakota High School. In July of 1955, Duane enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent one year in Fort Knox, Kentucky and one year in Germany in the Third Armored Division as an Armored Personnel Carrier driver.
Duane and Dorothy Mae Mallinger were united in marriage Dec. 23, 1955 at Northwood, Iowa. The couple moved to Minneapolis where Duane worked for Korhumel Steel as a receiving clerk.
In 1972, Duane started his truck driving career with Minnesota/Wisconsin Trucking and drove truck until his retirement in 1998. He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local #120
In 1967, the Mathiesen family moved to Rush City and then to a farm southeast of Rush City in 1975. Duane enjoyed the farm where he raised whiteface Hereford cattle, horses and other animals. He loved being in his shop in the garage where he was constantly inventing things. Duane also enjoyed fishing, hunting deer, duck and pheasant and woodworking. Duane and his family traveled in their motorhome to lakes up north and to visit relatives in North Dakota.
Duane died July 25, 2006 at the Fairview Lakes Regional Medical Center in Wyoming, Minnesota at the age of 69 years, 10 months and 24 days.
Surviving Duane, is his wife Dorothy, children: Laurie (Gary) Bromwich of Braham, Dave (Lisa) Mathiesen of Harris, Kelly Ann (Kelly Paul) Hokanson of Rush City, his grandchildren Michael Bromwich, Christian Mathiesen, Gregory Mathiesen; his mother: Ella Wallevand of Wahpeton, No. Dak., Ýsister: Sandra Hanson of Wyndmere, No. Dak. and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Duane was preceded in death by his father Herbert Mathiesen; daughter Renee Kay Marable; brother Vernon Mathiesen and an infant brother LaVern.
Rev. Michael Likens officiated at funeral services Saturday, July 29, 10:30 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church of Harris. Music was provided by Anita Ryberg. Casket Bearers included George Mallinger, Kelly Paul Hokanson, Gary Bromwich, Michael Bromwich, Lee Bailargeon and Stan Teeman with the interment in the Sunrise Cemetery at Sunrise, Minnesota. Military honors were provided by the American Legion Post # 139 of Harris. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Funeral and Cremation Service of Rush City; ìOlson Chapel.îÝ
