Boys score three goals in third period for win

Senior forward Levi Disrud scored the winning goal against Moose Lake, ending the Vikings losing streak.

After a seemingly eternity without a win, the North Branch boys hockey team finally put a W in the win column.

The boys beat Moose Lake Area 4-3 on the road Dec. 5.

The Vikings fought from a two goal deficit in the third period to earn the win in dramatic fashion.

Down 3-1, senior forward Cory Husnik fired a one-timer past the Moose Lake goalie in the third to cut the lead to one. He was assisted on the play by Jake Lenards. Soon afterwards, senior Alex Nelson found the back of the net to tie the game at 3-3 with under two minutes left in the third. Assists for the third goal of the game went to Lenards and Aaron Cedergren.

"With the game entering overtime with the score tied, the Vikings were determined to finish strong and seek a victory to end a long, win-less drought," assistant coach Darrell Schulte said.

With both teams fighting for the win, sophomore Brian Dahlstrom fed a streaking Levi Disrud who split one of two Moose Lake defenders and, using the other defender as a shield, sailed the puck past the goalie for the win.

However the win streak didn't last as long as the losing streak as the team lost their next game to Minneapolis East 3-1 on Dec. 9.

"The squad came out a little flat again to start the game ..." Schulte said.

North Branch fell 3-0 early and was unable to get back in the game. Disrud scored the only goal of the night for North Branch.

Disrud leads the team in points this season with six.

Junior goalie Jake Williams ended the game with 53 saves.

"Williams played particularly well," Schulte said.
