Sculpture and Bonsai featured at Arboretum
Posted: 12/20/06
The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is proud to present "Sculpting, Naturally: An Exhibit of Sculpture and Bonsai," Jan. 10 -- Feb. 25 in the Oswald Visitor Center.
This is a concurrent exhibit of the Society of Minnesota Sculptors (SMS) and the Minnesota Bonsai Society (MBS). Visitors will enjoy works of "sculpture" expressed through a variety of media including clay, wood, bronze, and living trees. The creative drive celebrates the diversity of forms in nature, with each artist's work reflecting a unique experience and hand-crafted interpretation of the natural world. As many as 40 sculptures and 7-8 evergreen and deciduous bonsai will be on display.
Visit with a sculptor or bonsai artist at work every weekend throughout the exhibit. Demonstrations will include techniques used to "sculpt" their medium, be it plant material, stone, metal or clay. Some of the sculptural works will be for sale. An artist reception will be held Sunday, Jan.14, 2 -- 4 p.m. The exhibit, demonstrations, and artist reception are free with general Arboretum admission.
Also on display in the Oswald Visitor Center, the new exhibit, "Beneath the Snow, Paintings by Suzanne Skon and Patricia Van Cleave," Jan. 10 -- March 25 in the Reedy Gallery. The word "snow" conveys the color white and the feeling of the cold. When the title is coupled with Skon and Van Cleave's energetic, colorful paintings, the result is a pleasing -- and maybe surprising -- contrast of warmth and life.
Admission to the Arboretum is $7 for adults, ages 15 and under free; members free. For more information about events and programs at the Arboretum, visit www.arboretum.umn.edu or call (952) 443-1400.
