Olson leads girls past Cambridge; offense feeble against Chisago

Kristen Robatcek takes a jump shot during a practice at the North Branch gym Dec. 1.

Gabrielle Olson was the free throw queen against Cambridge Nov. 28.

Olson nailed 14 of 18 free throws and helped the North Branch girls basketball team to its first win of the season against Cambridge 51-43.

The Vikings star point guard also dished out seven assists and 16 points in the win.

"We were able to keep the ball in Gab's hands down the stretch ... to secure the win," head coach Dan Schindler said.

The Vikings got off to a solid start and jumped ahead 22-11 early. Their offense stalled in the first half but they were able to jump start it before Cambridge could gain control.

"It seemed like we were stuck on 22 points for about five minutes. We need to learn to be consistent scoring throughout the game," Schindler said.

Senior Randi Zentner added eight points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Kristen Robatcek provided offensive fire power to the Viking roster, adding 14 points.

In the second game of the year, the Vikings played Chisago Lakes and lost 52-70.

The Vikings were impatient on offense and took some bad shots early, which proved to be costly errors against a strong Chisago Lakes squad.

Megan Scherer was the leading scorer for the girls with 12 points followed by Tiffany Good who finished with 11 points.

Compared to the first game of the season, Olson had an off night and managed only three points.

Schindler was quick to give credit to Chisago Lakes for making big shots when they needed to.

"We will get back in the gym and work on some of our breakdowns. It's still early in the season and we will be fine," Schindler said.

Up next, the girls play Mahtomedi on Dec. 8 and Saint Louis Park on Dec. 12. Look for results in next week's Post Review.
