Strong opening night for North Branch wrestling

North Branch sophomore Levi Klande tries to avoid a pin against an Irondale wrestler on Dec. 1 in North Branch. The Vikings won the season opener 40-24.

The North Branch boys wrestling team won its first match of the year 40-24 against Irondale at home Dec. 1.

Among the highlights from the match was a 21 second pin by sophomore Boyd Suparat.

Following the meet at home, the boys wrestled in the Monticello tournament where they faced three solid teams but were unable to escape with a victory. North Branch lost to: Annandale 60-18, New Ulm 18-40 and to Minewaska 18-42.

Head coach Tony Aho was satisfied with how his young team performed opening weekend. However, he said his team lost focus on the third match of the tournament, resulting in the lopsided score.

"This was a fun couple of days for our team. They are young, but the guys wrestled very hard," Aho said.

Erik Kostik beat a ranked wrestler from New Ulm and Suparat lost a tight match to a quality wrestler from Minewaska.

Tom Mork also wrestled strong for the Vikings. Aho said Mork put a lot of hard work into wrestling in the off season and that is starting to pay dividends this season.

"Our whole team did a solid job and I hope that leads to some wins this year," Aho said.
