NB schools receive $179,000 from
Microsoft settlement
North Branch Area Public Schools (NBAPS) will receive $179,000 to purchase computers and software from the settlement of a state class-action suit against Microsoft Corporation.
The money flowing to NBAPS and other Minnesota school districts is the result of a $174.5 million settlement in a suit between the state of Minnesota and Microsoft Corporation.
The suit charged that Microsoft monopolized trade for computer operating systems and overpriced its products.
The monies given to individual school districts are based on their percentage of students receiving free and reduced-price meals.
According to details of the settlement, school districts may use the money for hardware, software or technology training purposes.
The money must be used to ìsupplement,î not ìsupplant or replaceî technology systems within school districts.
The money must be spent by Jan. 12, 2012.
