NBMS student honored for Patriotís Pen essay

The 7th District Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary hosted the Patriotís Pen luncheon Sunday, Jan. 8 at the Golden Valley VFW Post #7051.
The 28 students sponsored by 11 posts and auxiliaries were honored for being top winners in each of their local groups.
The theme of their essay this year was ìWho Are Todayís Patriots.î
The competition was open to students in grades 6-8. Entrants were judged on their typewritten essay. The North Branch competition was held in grades 7 and 8.
The North Branch VFW Post and Auxiliary #6424 student honored at the luncheon was Onalee Yousey, an 8th-grader at NB Middle School. She was the overall winner in both the 7th and 8th grades at the school.
At the luncheon, each student was given a certificate of participation as well as a check. The speaker for the luncheon was the 2005 7th District winner Ashlee Kephart, who also won the state and national competition.
In her inspirational speech, she told of her experiences at state and national competition in Washington, D.C., as well as reading her 2005 essay.
