Winter Fest is this weekend

By MaryHelen Swanson

It's almost here, the 6th Annual Winter Fest sponsored by the North Branch Area Chamber and area businesses, Feb. 11 - 19.

It all begins with a Medallion Hunt today with daily clues posted at 10 a.m. at button sales sites and on the Chamber Web site, until itís found. See the first clue below. The lucky winner will receive $500 with a registered button (only half that amount without) But be sure to get your button by Feb. 10, after that the button sale ends.

On Saturday, bring your treasured old snowmobiles and participate in the Vintage Snowmobile Ride & Expo starting at 10 a.m. heading south on the Sunrise Prairie Trail.

Return to Central Park and park your sled for others to enjoy and you could possibly win a trophy.

Warm your tummy at the Chili Show Down which starts at 11 a.m. You can ìvote with your spoonî for your favorite chili. Thereís always a variety of recipes from which to chose.

Provided there is enough snow, get your friends and families together for the Snow Sculpting Contest in the park. This is an amateur competition starting at 11 a.m. (weather permitting). Trophies will be awarded.

There will also be door prizes given at 11 a.m. at the gazebo in the park.

For more excitement come early and watch as the professionals carve giant blocks of clear ice into works of art, as weather permits and it looks like it should.

These beautiful sculptures are kept on display in the park as long as weather allows. They are especially nice to view at night.
Other things you can do Saturday is take a nostalgic ride through the streets of North Branch in a horse-drawn carriage starting at 11 a.m.

Or toss your ice skates in the car and join ìFrosty the Snowmanî at the municipal ice rink at 1 p.m. with prizes, refreshments and pictures with Frosty.

The festival continues Sunday in Stacyís Central Park starting at 1 p.m. where you can go sliding with Frosty. Refreshments will be served. Bring your own sled for some old-fashioned winter fun.

It looks like winter has come back, so get out and enjoy it in North Branch this weekend.

Winter Fest Clue #1

Winter Fest 2006, it came to us so fast.
A cold wonderful time, too bad it doesnít last.
All over town a look you should cast,
Stay in the present, donít dwell in the past.
