The North Branch Area Public Schools Board of Education accepted the formal letter of retirement from North Branch Primary School Principal Janice A. Fischer at its board meeting last Thursday night.

ìMs. Fischer is an outstanding principal ... her creativity, dedication to new and creative programming and hard work for this school district is unsurpassed,î said School Board chairwoman Kim Salo.

Fischer has been principal at the primary school since 1991. Before that, she was a principal for two elementary schools in Mt. Horeb, Wisc. She has also served school districts in Stephen, Waseca, Mankato, Waterville and Glenville, Minn.

Fischer began her education career as a reading teacher in Sandquist, Minn., and did her student teaching in Munich, Germany.
Fischer has been actively involved in the Minnesota Elementary School Principalís Association (MESPA) throughout her career and served as a board member for several years. She has been honored as a Distinguished Principal by MESPA and was selected to participate in the BUSH Leadership Program through the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.

The BUSH Leadership Program was a two-year program aimed at mid-career educators with the purpose of improving the quality of education in Minnesota.

When asked what her plans are after North Branch Primary School, Fischer replied, ìI plan to travel the many roads of the United States in my motor home.î

The school board accepted Fischerís retirement, but not without a word of thanks.

ìWe would like to thank Ms. Fischer for her many years of service to the school district. Teachers, staff members and administrators within the school district and throughout the state hold her in high regard. Her leadership, candor, experience and knowledge will be greatly missed by this school district,î said Salo.
