Wrapping up 2005, the Chisago County commissioners Dec. 28, voted to give themselves a 3 percent raise, a similar raise to what county employees are receiving in the 2006 budget.
But, in adopting the resolution, it was included that a commissioner may choose not to accept the raise.
This week, at the end of the 2006 organizational meeting, there was discussion and confusion when now chairman Mike Robinson brought forth a resolution detailing how the commissioners can refuse the increase.
A representative of the county attorneyís office was called in to clarify the issue, and to address Commissioner Ben Montzkaís concern that the subject was not appropriate for discussion, according to Robertís Rules of Order, as it was not on the agenda.
Attorney Kristine Fuge appeared at the meeting and responded to the concerns by saying a new resolution was not needed, as the issue of refusal to accept the salary increase was included in the Dec. 8 adopted resolution.
The commissionerís salary increase would be from $27,419 to $28,237, if not refused.
The board also approved, in the same resolution, a list of committees for which per diems may be requested, per diems being paid on top of the salary.
The board also approved keeping per diems, at $45 a meeting, the same for 2006 for volunteers and citizens on committees.
In other action Dec. 28, the board approved a 3 percent average cost of living increase for non-union employees and officials. It was noted that there are seven unions in the county employees.
Also your elected officials in 2006 are receiving a three percent increase, their salaries are as follows:
Sheriff - $88,237
County Attorney - $86,485
Treasurer - $65,047
Auditor - $80,514
Also at this meeting, Commissioner Montzka spoke on rotating the leadership of the board and urged that Commissioner Rick Olseen be selected as chairman Jan. 3.
