Injured rider waits hours for rescue
By Patrick Tepoorten
A trip to the mail box by a Franconia Twsp., resident in the early afternoon of June 27 led to a startling discovery.
Michael David Mueller, 53, of Franconia Twsp., was walking to get his mail at around 1:35 p.m. when he heard what he thought to be a male voice calling for help from the brush.
Further investigation by Mueller led to the discovery of a man laying in the weeds, attempting to drag himself toward Mueller. The person, who later identified himself as Dorian Miles McMahon, 32, of Bloomington, asked Mueller for help.
Chisago County Deputy Chris Henricks responded to the scene and discovered McMahon and a motorcycle laying on its side near Muellerís mailbox.
According to McMahon, he had crashed his motorcycle at approximately 4 a.m. and he had been laying in the weeds since that time, over nine hours prior to his discovery by Mueller. He thought he had hit a deer, which caused the accident.
McMahon, who suffered a compound fracture of the ankle, was airlifted from the scene for medical treatment.
Chisago County Deputy Tracy Armistead investigated the circumstances of the crash and was unable to discover any evidence of contact with a deer.
It has been determined that McMahon was traveling north on Olinda Trail and it ìappeared that the driver failed to negotiate the turn...and went off the roadway.î
A skid mark at the scene indicated that McMahon did indeed fail to negotiate a curve although whether that error was caused by a deer is not known.
