Braham includes Swedish roots in Pie Day celebration

Posted: 7/19/06

Braham, ìHomemade Pie Capital of Minnesotaî and sister city to Orsa, Sweden, will celebrate with three big events Aug. 4-6.

Festivities begin with Braham Pie Day on Friday, a daylong event that focuses on pie.

Last year the festival sold 1,121 pies. Many performers and festival characters with Swedish connections will participate. And many of the pie eaters will be people with Swedish heritage.

Saturday activities will give visitors a chance to work off all the pie calories from the previous day. The day begins with a softball tournament, a ìWalk the Townî event where Nordic visitors will feel right at home as they participate in one- to three-mile walks around town.

Other activities include an all-American parade, childrenís activities, an art show and a quilt show.

But just like in Sweden, Braham residents like coffee time. Visiting Swedes can enjoy coffee time and meet local residents and listen to the lively music in the main street park. Ole Olssonís Ole Time Orkester will play music from Scandinavia.

On Sunday visitors and residents comes together for a gospel worship celebration featuring performers from local churches and some favorite Swedish hymns.
