It has been 12 years since a Rush City track athlete represented the school at the state track meet. Junior Jeremy Marty broke the streak with his performance at this years event.

On June 9 he competed in the 110 and 300 hurdles at the state meet at Hamline University in St. Paul. Marty failed to reach the finals in either event. In the 300 hurdles he finished with a time of 42.66, seventh in his heat.

"I could have done a lot better," Marty said.

Marty didn't get a full warm-up in because he was forced to change spikes before the race. He was wearing "needle spikes" which are illegal at the Hamline track. The spike issue was common with other athletes who were forced to change spikes at the last minute.

Marty noted the tough competition at the state meet and said his time would have placed him second at the Great River Conference meet.

The 300 hurdles aside, Marty also raced in the 110 hurdles. He finished ninth in his heat with a time of 17.41.

"From where he started, I think it's a great accomplishment," head coach Mike Vaughan said. "I think this experience will be good so next year we can do more damage."

Senior Eric Asfeld from Wadena-Deer won the 110 and 300 hurdles.
