Viola Victoria Mattson
Viola Victoria (Carlson) Mattson was born June 4, 1912 in West Rock, MN to Carl and Anna (Olson) Carlson. Viola died peacefully in her sleep on June 15, 2006 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Rush City.Ý
Vi was preceded in death by her husband Vernon, an infant grandson, sisters; Norma Swanson and Leona Carlson, brothers; Rueben, Kenneth, Darwin, Waldo, Harvey and Mylo Carlson.Ý
She is survived by her three children; Vicki Pugsley, Shoreview, Verna (Jack) Mutchler, St Paul, Warren (Kay) Mattson, North Branch, four grandchildren; Patrick Pugsley (Shoreview), Troy (Chris) Pugsley, Ham Lake, Tanya (Rob) Olson, St Croix Falls, Wisc., Brent Mattson, Hopkins and six great-grandchildren; Ashley, Morgan and Jacob Pugsley, and Caitlyn, Connor and Brayden Olson.Ý
Viola attended West Rock schools through eighth grade. As a young woman she helped out in her fatherís grocery store. That is how she met Vernon Mattson when he delivered newspapers on his route along Hwy 70 between Braham and Rock Creek.
Viola Carlson and Vernon Mattson were married May 8, 1943 when Vernon was home on leave from the Army. In
1955 they settled in Rush City with their three children, which is where Vernon died in 1980. Viola was active in the Rush City V.F.W. Auxiliary, Eagles Aerie 2663 Auxiliary, Womenís Club, Rush City Senior Dining Center, church groups and where ever she could help. She did domestic and commercial cleaning for many in Rush City and finally had to retire in 1992 after she had back surgery.
In 2003 Viola moved to Hillcrest Health Care Center in Rush City. On June 4, 2006 she celebrated her 94th birthday with family and friends.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Hillcrest for their gentle care and sincere concern for Viola while she was a resident at Hillcrest. Also a special thank you to all of her card playing friends (you know who you are) who made her life so enjoyable. She loved to play cards.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 19, 2006 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rush City with Pastor Laurie OíShea officiating.ÝCongregational singing was accompanied by organist Doris Swanson. Casket Bearers included Viís nephews Dan Carlson, Butch Carlson, Jerry Carlson, Gary Swanson, Dennis Swanson and friends Joel Anderson and John Wolf. Interment was in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Funeral and Cremation Service of Rush City *Olson Chapel.
