In NB Lt. Forner named interim police chief

As he begins his 24th year in law enforcement, Lt. Steve Forner has a new title, Interim Police Chief.
Monday night, June 26, the city council unanimously appointed him to fill the position that will be vacated by Jules Zimmer as Zimmer retires from law enforcement at the end of July.
The council debated briefly about how to fill the position, whether to look internally or open the application process to the outside. Most of the councilmembers agreed that looking internally was the right thing to do, as it gives employees an incentive for advancement. Councilman Larry Erickson advocated for outside posting.
It was, in the end, decided that Forner, who already was acting chief, should be selected for an interim position for a period of six months.
During the six-month period, the council plans to study the job description for police chief to see if it is exactly what they want for the city.
At the end of six months. Forner will be evaluated by city staff. If it is determined that he has performed the chief duties well and that he would fit into the new job description that will be created, he may become the police chief. It was not decided how the final hiring would go.
Councilwoman Theresa Furman reported that in conversation with over 30 individuals in the community she found Forner to be very well liked.
It was noted at the meeting that the American Legion Post #85 had sent a letter to the city recommending Forner for the police chief position.

I used to speed walk back in the day and Steve would make sure that I was safe. I know that he will do an excellent job!
