NB Legion Auxiliary presents books to 3rd graders

Bobbie Elmstrand, representing the Auxiliary to American Legion Post # 85 presented the ěAll-American Samî books to assistant principal Kirsten Bouwens for the third-grade class.

ěWe trust the children will gain a new awareness of our flag, the pledge, our freedom and our veterans protection of our nationís liberty,î said the members of the NB American Legion Auxiliary.

As part of the American Legionís national project, known as ěAll-American Sam Celebrates America,î the auxiliary presented special books to local third-graders.

Book one covers the Declaration of Independence, 4th of July, the Constitution and Lady Liberty.

Book two covers the Red, White and Blue, Veteranís Day and Memorial Day.

It is the hope of the American Legion that these books will help children have fun learning about America. All-American Sam encourages children to share the lessons with their families. The books include a pull-out centerfold, a two-way poster of Old Glory and the Pledge. Lessons in the book can fit into math, English, literature, poetry, history, art, music, educational games, all of which stress how to be a good citizen.

All-American Samís lessons include such things as:

ď children identifying their dreams for the future as Americans.

ďstudents illustrating their patriotic feelings with the help of an art teacher.

ď children reading the news about local veterans, then composing a letter or drawing to send to a veteran thanking them for keeping our land free.

ď children writing an advertisement for a local newspaper to say why we need to celebrate Veteranís Day, Flag Day, Memorial Day and others.

ď children studying the flag, and learning about flag respect.

ď children wearing red, white and blue one day a month, planning an historical skit, poem or rap to share with the class.

ď students beginning a pen pal relationship with children in another country to exchange news about daily lives, symbols, history, great men and women, etc.
