ATV use within city limits of North Branch
![]() |
ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) users are asked by the North Branch Police Dept. to please ride responsibly, respect private property and obey the law. Minnesota State Law applies to all ATV use within the city limits of North Branch.
Some basic laws include:
Agricultural Zone Restriction: You may not drive an ATV within the right-of-way (ditch) of a state or county road from April 1 to August 1 in the agricultural zone. This does not apply to an ATV licensed and used for agricultural purposes. The agricultural zone, as applied to the City of North Branch, is anything south of HWY 95.
A valid driverís license is required to operate on any city street or right-of-way, including the ditches and slopes or in crossing roads.
An ATV may not be operated at any time within the right-of-way of an interstate highway or freeway.
ATV can only be operated in the ditch or outside bank or slope of a state highway, county state-aid or county highway. An exception to this rule applies only to an ATV registered for private use and used for agricultural purposes. An ATV may be operated on the extreme right hand side of any trunk, county state-aid, or county highway.
ATV can be operated on the right-hand side of city roads.
ATV cannot be operated in the right-of-way from one half hour after sunset to one half hour before sunrise.
A person under twelve is only permitted to operate an ATV on private property. A person under twelve may not operate an ATV to make a direct crossing of a public road right-of-way or on a public road right-of-way (including the ditch or outside bank or slope).
Persons age twelve through fifteen may make a direct crossing of a public road right-of-way if they have a valid ATV safety certificate and they are accompanied on another ATV by a person eighteen years or older who holds a valid driverís license.
A person may not operate an ATV within the city unless the vehicle has been registered with the DNR or is exempt from registration.
All persons under eighteen must wear a helmet when operating or riding on an ATV.

When you say you can't ride ditchs in agriculturial zone, does that include Isanti Co. because DNR map
shows it is OK to ride ditchs south of 95 in Isanti west of 68?
