Of the 26 batters junior pitcher Jake Bosman faced, nearly half (46.2 percent to be exact) went back to their dugouts with their heads down.
On May 2, the Tigers beat conference foe Onamia at home 4-1.
ìBosman did a great job keeping a good hitting Onamia team off balance,î head coach Bob Schlagel said.
Bosman pitched the distance, striking out 14, walking three and giving up four hits.
The Tigers hit the ball well in the first inning, scoring three runs in their first appearance at the plate. The scoring started when Jason Benson walked and then scored off a triple by Adam Best. Best scored on a double by Bosman and then Bosman scored off a single by Brad Carlson.
ìWe had some timely hitting which gave us an early lead and the rest was done by Bosman,î Schlagel said.
Later in the week, on May 4, the Tigers beat Ogilvie 7-12.
Rush City scored four runs in the second inning but Ogilvie fired back and countered with a touchdown worth of runs in the third. However, the Tiger defense held them scoreless the remainder of the game. Rush City batted in five runs in the last three innings to end the game. Best added a two run dinger in the fourth inning.
ìWe didnít play particularly well in this game,î Schlagel said. ìBut the kids never quit even though they fell behind 7-4.î
Best pitched the last four innings, earning the save and shutting down Ogilvie at the plate. He struck out five, gave up two hits and walked zero. Carlson hit three singles and had four runs batted in on the game.
For their third game of the week, Rush City played Hinckley-Finlayson on May 5 and walked away with their third win of the week.
It was the second time the two teams faced each other this season. On April 18 Rush City edged the Jaguars by one run. Last week it was nearly as close as the Tigers won 6-8.
Best pitched earning his second save in two nights. He recorded five strikeouts, a walk and nine hits. Best also had a hot bat, with two doubles and three RBIs
Defensively, the Tigers were inept; committing five errors in the game. Because of the errors, Schlagel said they were fortunate to record the win.
ì[We] played our worst game of the year defensively,î Schlagel said. ìTimely hitting and gustily performance by Best helped us survive.î
The experienced seniors hit the ball well for the Tigers. Noah Reichert and Mackenzie Johnston each recorded two hits. Carlson notched three hits and two RBIís.
The wins improves Rush City to 10-2 on the season and 6-2 in the Great River Conference.
Up next, the Tigers face St. Johns Prep May 11 and Pine City May 12.
