Rush City topples AFS; fall to Pine City and Ogilvie
By Steve Morris
The Tigers lost two of three games during the fifth week of the season.
The week started with a 20-3 win over Academy of Foods and Science May 2.
Janet Kemen stuck out 10 in four innings. Head coach Kim Erdman said AFS had a hard time catching Kemenís fast ball.
Brittany Scheffer finished the game and earned her first varsity playing time. Scheffer struck out two of the five batters she faced. The blowout allowed other girls to get varsity playing time.
ìI was especially pleased with the support the older girls gave the younger girls when they got in there,î Erdman said. ìThis was a good opportunity to get some experience for girls that will be relied upon next year.î
Kemen, Bethany Peters, Charlene Hebert and Bobbi Cort each had two hits for the Tigers.
The next game, Rush City was on the receiving end of a blowout as they lost to Ogilvie 10-0.
Kemen took the loss for the Tigers.
ìWe really played good ball,î Erdman said. ìWe had a few mistakes that need to be corrected, but I thought we moved to the ball quite well and we made some nice plays.î
Catcher Laura Gamache had a couple of nice plays when she threw out two girls trying to steal second. Charlene Hebert threw out a runner from right field for the second time this season.
Kemen, Hebert, and Cort recorded Rush City hits.
Next, Rush City played powerhouse Pine City and lost 13-3.
Pine City has a solid team this year. Their only loss of the season came against St. Anthony 2-1.
ì ... we knew we needed to be on top of our game when we played them,î Erdman said.
The Tigers stuck with Pine City for the first two innings. (the score was tied 1-1 after two innings.) It wasnít longer after that Pine Cityís bats caught on fire and ran away with the game. The Dragons had 16 hits on the night.
Erdman said he wasnít pleased with his teams performance at the plate. Pine City struck out 13 batters with a ìhandfulî of girls watching their third strike.
ìI need my girls to go up to the plate with confidence and swing the bat hard,î Erdman said.
Cort pitched and took the loss for the Tigers.
Kemen, Peters and Hebert each scored runs for the Tigers.
