AED Donated to Stacy Lent Fire Department

L to R Cleit Bracht, Stacy Lions Club, Jerry Schroeder, Stacy Lions Club, Stacy Lent Fire Department Chief Larry Granberg, Stacy Lions Club President Rock Mueller, and Stacy City Councilmember John Walz, acting as Mayor, make the presentation.

The City of Stacy and the Stacy Lions Club presented three new state-of-the-art Automated External Defibrillators (AEDís) to the Stacy Lent Fire Department on Wednesday, May 10. The AEDís will go into Engines 1 and 2 and into the Chiefís vehicle. The units cost $1600.

Stacy City Councilmember John Daher delivered the equipment which was then presented to acting Stacy Mayor John Walz and Fire Chief Larry Granberg by Stacy Lions Club president Rock Mueller and Stacy Lions Club members Cleit Bracht and Jerry Schroeder. The city of Stacy donated the money for two of the AEDís and the Lions Club donated the money for the third unit. Medtronic donated the trainer, saving the department $600 in training costs. Daher commented that ìÖ.if it saves one life isnít that worth the investment?î

The units will not need recharging for 2-5 years and are able to deliver up to 2000 shocks. There is a warning message programmed in to alert the user ìNeeds Serviceî. This equipment means the fire department has greater ability and flexibility to respond to calls. The American Heart Association (AHA) recently updated guidelines to include expanded use of AEDís during a cardiac arrest episode. The AHA says that the increase in survival goes up to over 90 percent when an AED is employed in response to cardiac arrest with the use of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, CPR.

ìI think itís a good idea. Hopefully youíll never have to use them,î said Lions Club member Jerry Schroeder as Daher explained how the AEDís are used, before the presentation. Schroeder also requested Daher and his colleagues at the fire department stop by a Lions Club meeting some night to give the Lions some training.

The Lions hope to raise more money for their community projects on June 3 as they hold their first Stacy Lions Club Bike Run. The Stacy Lent Fire Department sells pull tabs at the Stacy Bar and Grill to help support the indispensable services a community fire department provides.
