The Bell Museum

It will take less than a tank of gas to get to the Bell Museum on the East Bank Campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

There you will find an abundant of educational and exciting events, exhibits and activities for the whole family.

Now through Aug. 27, see Bloom! Botanical Art Through the Ages.

Art and science find beautiful form in the work of botanical artists and illustrators. ìBloom!î will feature approximately 60 drawings, paintings, prints, books, botanical models, and fine crafts from public and private collections.

Among the highlights will be magnificent hand-colored prints and books from the golden era of botanical art in the 18th century; stunning botanical wall charts, beautiful in themselves and an important means of teaching plant science; and contemporary drawings and paintings that exemplify the living traditions of botanical art as well as imaginative interpretations of plants and ecosystems.

CafÈ Scientifique: Fishing For Trouble?

Free. Must be 18 or older to attend.

Join Swackhamer and Sigurdson of the University of Minnesotaís Water Resources Center for a ìstate of the lakesî talk. They will discuss the chemicals that can be found in our lakes and rivers and how they affect water quality, fisheries, and human health. Learn how to keep toxins from our lakes and rivers ñ and from the fish on your kitchen table.

Free. Must be 18 or older to attend.

New trends in gardening incorporate water into the landscape, both for beauty and to help reduce the ecological impacts of stormwater runoff. Learn about rain and water gardens and how they benefit the environment, and get tips on how to start one. Find out how non-native plants may present a threat to Minnesota waters if they are introduced through water or rain gardens.

Drop-in nature crafts and activities for families

1-3 p.m. the second Saturday of every month

Pocket Plant Presses, June 10 ñ Press leaves and flowers into a pocket plant press that you can take anywhere. Learn how to turn pressed plants into a bookmark or field guide.

Butterfly Lifecycle Mobiles, July 8 ñ make a colorful butterfly lifecycle mobile that you can hang in your garden.

Nature Tots

A program for toddlers and preschoolers with their parents, held the first Thursdays of every month from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Free with museum admission but registration is required.

Hide and Seek! Camouflage, June 1 ñ Through games, stories and crafts, discover how animals use their coloring to blend into their environment to hide from predators.

Fly Away Home, July 6 ñ Mimic insect movements; hear a story about crawling, flying, jumping, swimming and walking insects; and create your own insect.
