Eagle Scout project completed

Eighth-grader Garrett Smetanaís Eagle Scout project was dedicated in Central Park Saturday - an honor to all those who served in the U.S. military. Smetana (far left) said it took about six months to complete, including landscaping the area by the flag poles, procuring the granite monument, having it engraved and putting it all together.

The quote on the monument reads: ěThe probability we face in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just.î -Abraham Lincoln. During the dedication ceremony, NB Mayor Gloria Karsky said the monument is great to have in the city park. Of the quote Smetana chose, she said itís not only a military saying, itís a life saying. Even as a young person in school, she said, it takes a lot of courage to stand up for what you believe in.

Also as part of the ceremony, local veterans, pictured with Smetana above, provided a 21-gun salute. Smetana is a member of Boy Scout Troop 411. He has been in scouting since Tiger Cubs and is an 8th grader at NBMS. He said he appreciated the help and encouragement he received from his parents Tracy and Scott Smetana. He also acknowledged the help of several businesses and people in the preparation of his Eagle Scout project.
